Synopsis:
In the past, the gift of receiving visual or aural signs from the future was handed down from generation to generation on the Outer Hebrides islands off the Scottish coast. Between 2017 and 2019, Canadian artist Joshua Bonnetta set about exploring their landscapes and collecting the oral history of this visionary gift. (…) At times on alert, at times in torpor, the spectator is enveloped in a world as vivid as it is unreal; “a thin place” in the words of a woman whose beautiful consolatory singing stirs the sea into soft ripples, at the extremely thin frontier between sky and sea, between foreknowledge and memory. Synopsis:
Le don de recevoir de l’avenir des signaux visuels ou sonores se transmettait autrefois de génération en génération chez les peuples des Hébrides Extérieures au large de l’Écosse. Entre 2017 et 2019, l’artiste canadien Joshua Bonnetta s’est attaché à explorer les paysages et à recueillir l’histoire orale de ce génie visionnaire. (…) Tantôt en alerte, tantôt dans la torpeur, le spectateur est enveloppé dans un monde aussi vivide qu’irréel ; a « thin place », comme l’appelle une femme dont le beau chant consolateur agite la mer d’ondulations discrètes, à la frontière inframince du ciel et de la terre, de la prescience et de la mémoire.
